Team Penning at Double E Ranch Cowgirl Camp

Team Penning at Double E Ranch Cowgirl Camp

Always wanted to learn what it take to move cattle? Spend 5 days at the Double E Ranch.

Did you know Roy Rogers will be 100 in November!

We’ll begin Roundup in another few weeks, the County Fair will start September 28 and on November 1 Roy Rogers will be 100 years old.

Where does the time go??? Sixteen years ago Alan and I decided to make the move to New Mexico. Blessed with some incredible luck, we found this ranch, quite by accident. It hasn’t always been easy. We spent the first year trying to clean the ranch of 75+ head of wild cows. This country is unforgiving. Between the trashed pickups and stock trailers, hiring day working cowboys who could really ride but couldn’t stay sober and the price of cattle at the sale we spent way more money gathering than the cattle were ultimately worth. Great experience; wouldn’t do it again.

Who would have guessed that folks from all around the world would find their way to Gila, New Mexico, share this lifestyle with us for a short while and some returning, becoming friends.

To all of you, Alan and I say ‘Gracias!’ It has been an amazing ride, hasn’t it? Filled with the unexpected. Some good; some bad; but always interesting.

So, getting back to Roy…let’s all take a moment, look up to the heavens and let Roy know how he ultimately impacted the lives of so many millions of people. Tell him ‘thanks’. Without him, our world and our lives would have been so much different, indeed.

Another Amazing Sunset

Our rain generally comes in the form of afternoon thunderstorms, short in duration, but very sweet.  Last evening, the colors were spectacular.  We watched as the rain moved toward HQ.  Amazingly breathtaking!

More Rain!

More rain this past week! Pleasant, afternoon thunderstorms, with an emphasis on THUNDER! We finished reshingeling the roof (whew!) and there is water AND livestock in First Valley. Now, that is an accomplishment! Never, in the history of this ranch, has there been water in First Valley. Cattle everywhere grazing; calves hunkered next to the water tanks for shade.

Rain!

We finally got rain! Yesterday, 1/2″, slow, steady. It’s amazing how fast brown turns to green! This morning, everything has changed! The mares preferred grazing to hay. Even Tumbleweed had to be coaxed over for a bottle of milk!

Along the creek at sunset, we drove  to Medina Road, checking the new water storage tank.  We’re blessed:  fat cattle, lots of calves – and water in First Valley, after 10 days of 12 hour days in the heat.

Just set up a few corral panels across the creek.  Warm today, Speedy bred Cowgirl – cross your fingers for a palomino colt!

Tumbleweed Owns the Pasture!

The grass is always greener on the horses side of the fence.

Droppings from Headquarters

“Tumbleweed” spent the morning in the front yard at HQ. Thinks he’s a dog…
